Dementia Friends

What is dementia

Dementia is the term used to describe a number of different conditions affecting the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common, but there are many more conditions which cause dementia. Vascular dementia is the second most common type of dementia. People with dementia can have symptoms including difficultly in thinking, language and problem solving, memory loss and changes in their mood and behaviour.

What is a Dementia Friend and what do they do

A Dementia Friend is a person who has learnt about dementia and the effects it can have on somebody, so that they can help support individuals with dementia and help their community. Helping support someone with dementia can be very easy and it doesn’t have to take up a lot of time. You could visit a person with dementia and spend time talking to them. You could be more patient in a café queue if you realised the person in front of you had dementia. You could wear your Dementia Friends badge to raise awareness.

Helen’s story

I became a dementia friend through my work as a solicitor. Becoming a Dementia Friend helped me to understand what it may be like to live with the condition.  This has enabled me to support clients who have dementia and help families to understand what it is like living with dementia.  I want to help promote a dementia friendly society by talking about the condition and raising awareness in my community.
